It’s been a very emotionally difficult week for me. It’s hard for me to understand how and why DMX is dead. Standing on my balcony on South Beach, drinking Ace of Spades, and listening to “Slippin’ by DMX creates a moment of clarity. DMX was a Hip-Hop prophet, and his lyrics illuminated the world’s inequalities, social injustice, beauty, and power to heal. DMX fought personal demons his entire life, and music created a bridge between insanity and greatness.
Listening to ‘Slippin’, reciting his lyrics in pain, because DMX should still be here. I watched DMX funeral proceedings on TV, and it was beautiful to see his original label Ruff Ryders hold him down. DMX and Ruff Ryders are Hip-Hop royalty and changed rap culture forever. Ruff Ryder’s sound was dark, high energy, uncensored, controlled rage, and creative genius.
DMX’s music created its own lane and brought rap back to its roots. Ruff Ryders artists showcased the psychological effect and power of Hip-Hop music. Ruff Ryders remains an iconic brand in Hip-Hop.
