Tennis’ grandest Grand Slam was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, but Wimbledon has returned to the All England Club this summer—and so have the celebrity fans.
While some of the biggest names in the sport are sitting out the third major of the year (including Naomi Osaka and Rafael Nadal) and many top players have already been bounced from the tournament (including Serena Williams, Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas), that hasn’t kept bold-faced names from entertainment, sports, and of course the British royal family from showing their love of love-love sets on Centre Court.
As of Manic Monday, no American players were left in the draw, but there are still plenty of good storylines to watch for in Wimbledon’s second week. Does 39-year-old Roger Federer have any grass court magic left in his racket or will No. 1 seed Novak win his 20th Grand Slam singles title to tie Federer for the most overall—and reignite the debate about tennis’ GOAT.
In the women’s bracket, favorite Ash Barty is going for her second Grand Slam title and could face No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka, who is going for her first major victory in singles.
For those who don’t always keep their eye on the ball, there is always a lot to watch in the Wimbledon stands. Once again, the tournament’s patron, Catherine, the Duchess of Wimbledon, made an appearance in the royal box on Centre Court, but also took some time out to catch a doubles match on Court 14, alongside Wimbledon royalty Tim Henman.
Showing that she’s an all-around sports fan, the Duchess of Cambridge also attended England’s soccer match against Germany at Wembley last week along with Prince William and Prince George, leading many to wonder if the little prince will make his Wimbledon debut this year.
Athletes from other sports always turn out for tennis action and this year’s Wimbledon is no exception. In addition to longtime tennis fan former F1 legend Jackie Stewart, a star from a different kind of court was in attendance this week—Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons confirmed the rumors that he was dating British TV host Maya Jama by kissing her courtside on Centre Court.
The new couple were seated with actress Sienna Miller, who attended the tournament with her friend (and likely new boyfriend) Archie Keswick, whose family controls the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. They were also spotted with model Poppy Delevingne, who attended the tournament with her father, Charles Delevingne, a British real estate developer.
Another new couple making their Wimbledon debut was SNL star Pete Davidson, who looked too smitten with his new girlfriend, Brigderton actress Phoebe Dynevor, to pay much attention to the tennis.
Other chic celebrities included British Vogue editor in chief Edward Enninful, who struck a pose at the All England Club with musician FKA Twigs, and Bear Grylls, who took a break from surviving in the wilderness to brave a seat in the royal box.
Wimbledon regular David Beckham has yet to makes his first appearance at the tournament this year—presumably because he is too enthralled by the Euro 2020 tournament—but his youngest son, Romeo Beckham, flew the family flag on Day 3 of Wimbledon, attending with his girlfriend, model Mia Regan.
Of course, as the tournament progresses this week, all eyes will be on the royal box—when they’re not locked on Centre Court—to see which members of the British Royal family are in attendance. One thing is certain—Meghan Markle will almost certainly not be sitting with her sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge, this year so as not to cause a royal pain in the grass.
