Listen to HOODLUM’s “Made Different”: New Rap Music Today – Pitchfork

HOODLUM – “Made Different”

It’s cliché to say “this rapper should be way bigger just because I like them” since we all know it’s way more complicated than that. But I will say it anyway about HOODLUM, a San Antonio rapper who over the past year has honed his distinct sound. His beats sound like they’ve been soaked in codeine, and his easy going croaky flow makes him sound like he’s hungover. The music doesn’t have an obvious lineage, but you can tell he grew up immersed in the hazy sounding raps over in Houston (from Screw to Swishahouse and so on). “Made Different” is one of HOODLUM’s best songs yet, especially the first half, where BigTexJohnny’s slow booming drums and warped sample sets the mood for the 26-year-old’s laid back street tales: “Bitch I’m slidin’ with my weapon/Better watch just how you steppin’,” he raps. After about the first minute, the song undergoes an evolution, as HOODLUM picks up the pace and the gentle drum patterns suddenly start thudding. Though I prefer the first half, this switch up does make me picture all the places I would love to hear the song aloud this summer, but I guess I would have to head to Texas for that.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Check out previous Ones, and listen to new rap from HOODLUM and more on our Spotify playlist.
