Remember when Celine Dion suddenly had a major fashion revival a few years ago, starting when she famously wore an oversized Vetements Titanic hoodie with heels, and then kept getting photographed wearing fantasy couture looks?
Or when Zendaya wore an elegant Vivienne Westwood gown with dreadlocks to the Oscars, prompting a global discussion over the politics of Black hair after a reporter made an insensitive comment? That kind of viral pop culture moment is largely down to a celebrity stylist, who is working with the star to create a trademark “look”.
In these two examples, it was stylist Law Roach orchestrating these major fashion moments (see slide 1). But there is a whole network of power stylists around the globe, working hard to create the looks you see on the red carpet, in magazines, and on social media. Curating a recognisable persona, from their hair and beauty, to clothes and home decor, is a full-time job for some celebrities, and we all know that they may enlist various chefs, trainers, and makeup artists to help.
A wardrobe stylist is another extension of that: someone who can create an entire persona for someone through style. It doesn’t stop with what they wear on TV or in music videos, either. Many stylists are former fashion editors who help style photoshoots and press appearances – and street style is a whole other category. Celebrities who have paparazzi following them at every turn may even enlist someone to prepare their “off duty” looks, so they look on-brand even when they’re pumping petrol or walking the dog. (Wouldn’t that be nice?)
