Though temperatures are rising in Austin right now, much of the city is still struggling with lack of water or other essentials due to the prolonged winter storm — and celebrities with big platforms are helping fund the efforts to feed and shelter people in need.
From New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to musician Kacey Musgraves to actress Reese Witherspoon, to philanthropic Austin couple Andy Roddick and Brooklyn Decker, celebrities are encouraging mutual aid donations and buying food for Central Texans. Eater has yet to hear of any donations from Sen. Ted Cruz.
- Ocasio-Cortez launched a fundraiser on Thursday to support relief efforts across the state of Texas, which included several Austin-based organizations as recipients (Family Eldercare, Ending Community Homelessness Coalition, Feeding Texas, and Central Texas Food Bank). The fund has already raised over $2 million.
- Singer Kacey Musgraves created a t-shirt with all profits going to a variety of Texas charities, including Casa Marianella in Austin.
- Austinites actress/model Brooklyn Decker and tennis great Andy Roddick donated 1,000 tacos from Taco Deli to Dell-Seton frontline workers on Friday and 2000 tacos to Dell Children’s on Saturday
- Former football player Michael Huff (Raiders, UT Austin) paid for 1,000 tacos from East Austin taco shop Juan in a Million.
- San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro raised over $150,000 for Feeding Texas.
- Actress Reese Witherspoon encouraged her her 2.9 million Twitter followers to follow her in donating to the Austin Free Fridge project.
- Model Chrissy Teigen retweeted donation information for Austin Mutual Aid to her 13.7 million followers.
- Actor Matthew McConaughey encouraged donations to Meals on Wheels, Austin Urban League, and Boys and Girls Club of Austin. He also worked with NFL player Dak Prescott to provide meals to a church-turned-emergency-shelter in Dallas.
- DJ/producer Diplo purchased 400+ meals for the Austin Texas Musicians relief drive on Sunday at the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex, including food from Via 313, Bummer Burrito, Contigo, and Oseyo.
