40th Annual Downtown Festival and Art Show: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  today, Nov. 7 in the Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville. (https://ift.tt/3bOvFQf) Masterful blend of art, music and entertainment presented by the city of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. More than 200  of the nation’s most talented artists will display original art including oils and acrylics, watercolors, sculpture, jewelry,  ceramics and photography. Entertainment on three stages, international cuisine, and a blues concert on Friday.

Amigo The Devil:  8 p.m. show, 6:30 p.m. doors open, Tuesday, Nov. 9. High Dive, 210 SW 2nd Ave. Tickets $18 ADV, $21 DOS A master of the macabre, Amigo the Devil (aka Danny Kiranus) expands his repertoire with romantic, philosophic and emotional narratives on Born Against, without sacrificing the genre-bending style that garnered him critical praise and a passionate, rapidly-growing cult following. Amigo The Devil is a beautiful storyteller and fearless raconteur who can make you think, make you laugh, make you unsettled or make you cry, sometimes all in the same song.

Zac Person – Les Get Loud North American Tour: 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, High Dive. Zac Person is a recording artist based  in Austin, Texas known for contemporary, pop-rock approach to blues and American roots music. Tickets $10 ADV, $12 DOS.

Lione Bart’s Oliver: Consider Yourself At Home: Thursday – Sunday Nov. 19 -Dec. 19, The Gainesville Community Playhouse (GCP), Vam York Theater,  4039 NW 16th Blvd. (.gcplayhouse.org) GCP invites you to “Consider Yourself At Home” with Lionel Bart’s classic musical, Oliver! Based on the novel, Oliver Twist, by Charles Dickens, the show, set in Victorian London, follows the trials and tribulations of young orphan Oliver, as he seeks safety and to be loved. Masks will be required of all patrons.

Sunday Assembly: 11 a.m. Nov. 21, Price Center, Liberty Center, 3131 NW 13th St. Masks are required. Guest speaker: Dr. Paul Ortiz,  associate professor in the UF History Department and director of the award winning Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. The title of his talk will be “Defending History: The Struggle to Tell Historical Truths in the United States”. There will be time for discussion following his presentation. Music will be provided by our SA musicians with the opportunity to sing along. The Sunday Assembly is a secular community.

Deck The Runway: 6 p.m. Nov. 19, Stengel Field at Butler Town Center. Hosted by Butler Town Center, it will feature a night of fun, fashion, and philanthropy featuring the latest styles from Butler retailers modeled by locals. There will be tasty appetizers and drinks from Butler restaurants. The event benefits Pals Thrive, an organization that provides free counseling and mental health services to teens within a school environment focusing on bullying, suicides, and violence prevention.

GFAA GALLERY: Now through Nov. 20, the exhibition ‘SYNERGY’:  integrative exhibition with the Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG). (gainesvillefinearts.org). Smaller original artworks for sale in our gift shop. Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Friday 1 – 6 pm  and Saturday 11 am – 4 pm. 1314 S. Main Street. 

The Harn Museum: Plural Domains: Selected Works from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Collection. The exhibition aims to advance cultural understanding and educational dialogue among Latin American artists and global audiences. Plural Domains will span both venues, with works on view at the Harn Museum of Art from now through April 24, 2022 and the University Galleries from now to Dec. 3, 2021.

Shadow to Substance: Now through Feb  2022, The Melvin and Lorna Rubin Gallery, The Harn Museum, 3259 Hull Road. The exhibition creates a chronological arc from the past to the present into the future using historical photographs from the Harn and Smathers Library collections and through the lens of Black photographers working today. 

Good News Arts: collaborates with local, regional, and national artists to provide creative education opportunities, exhibitions, and cultural programming to the community. Good News Arts  serves as a community center, free and accessible to all. Located in High Springs at the First Avenue Centre, 23352 W HWY 27, Suite 80.

Between Heaven & Earth, The Paintings of Alyne Harris: On exhibition through Jan. 15, 2022 are part of the City of Gainesville’s Of This Place permanent art collection. This exhibit is a community cultural asset and features 200 paintings by Gainesville native Alyne Harris, who paints to express both her lived experiences and her profound spiritual life. Harris’ work draws heavily from African-American traditions including jumping the broom in her wedding scenes. Her paintings call on viewers to travel the paths of their own recollections, an exchange that becomes part of the work itself. Her work reminds the viewer that revisiting the past can connect us with the present and the future. 

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens: 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. or dusk today, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, 4700 SW 58th Drive. Admission, $10 adults, $5 children ages 5-13, free for children under 5 years old accompanied by parents. (kanapaha.org) Dogs on a leash and up to date on vaccines with no history of aggression are allowed in the park. Garden hours: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday – Wednesday, and Friday, closed Thursday. 9 a.m.-  7p.m. or dusk Saturday and Sunday. 

Matheson Museum:  “When Johnny Came Marching Home: Outdoor exhibition, located on the westside of the main Matheson buildingall of those who served.  behind the set of flagpoles behind the set of flags along Sweetwater Branch. (378 2280, mathesonmuseum.org) This sculpture was designed by Ken Mc Gurn and fabricated by Matthew Pollard. The exhibit honor all of those who served. McGurn served in the Army and Army Reserves from 1963- 1979.  He was deployed to Vietnam in 1965 and Germany from 198-1970.  Current exhibits in person and online include “Trailblazers: 150 Years of Alachua County Women,” celebrating the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in the U.S.; McCarthy Moment: The Johns Committee in Florida” on display online and in person. Hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 513 E. University Ave.
