Who is the person behind the portrait? The William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia, is presenting a survey of 18th and 19th century paintings titled “A Painting Tradition.” This exhibition looks at the importance of the portrait and the figure in Europe and America. From military portraits and members of the aristocracy, to the working class and beloved horses, it explores the various styles of portrait and figure painting that were prevalent from the Georgian to Victorian periods in Europe and through the Early and Revolutionary periods in America. “A Painting Tradition” will be on display through Sept. 19.

The 2021 “FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social & Politically Engaged Art,” will on display at East Tennessee State University’s Reece Museum Oct. 4 through Dec. 10. The exhibit’s more than $1,500 in awards will be announced and presented during the exhibition reception and juror talk at the Reece Museum on a date still to be determined. “Mixed Americans,” an exhibition featuring works by a diverse group of artists of mixed racial heritage, is on display at Tipton Gallery, 126 Spring St., Johnson City, through Oct. 8. “Tennessee Fancy: Decorative Arts of Northeast Tennessee” will be on display through Oct. 31 at the William King Museum of Art’s Cultural Heritage Gallery. Theatre Bristol will hold auditions for “All Together Now,” which will come to the Paramount Center for the Arts Nov. 12-15. The Kingsport Carousel is a totally renovated 1956 Allen Herschell carousel located inside the temperature-controlled “Pal’s Roundhouse” at 350 Clinchfield St. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. All rides are $1.
Collectibles
Vinyl Collectors Show will be held Sept. 19 and Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Double Tree Hilton, 211 Mockingbird Lane, Johnson City. Admission is $2. Masks are required of all customers and vendors. Come shop for rare vinyl LPs and 45s, plus CDs, music DVDs, memorabilia and more.
Concerts
Music on the Square, one of Jonesborough’s live outdoor concert series, continues each Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. through Sept. 24 in front of the Washington County Courthouse on Main Street. Music on the Square is a free event, but event goers are encouraged to bring a chair or a blanket to ensure a seat.
Multi-Dove Award winning and multi-Grammy nominated trio The Martins will perform at the

A concert with Pat “Mother Blues” Cohen will be held at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol, Virginia, on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Cohen will bring Bourbon Street to Bristol with the dynamic, high-energy show she is known and loved for in New Orleans. The sixth season of Main Street Brews and Tunes in downtown Jonesborough continues through Sept. 26 with five concerts remaining before the close of the season. Exchange Place Living History Farm will host its Fall Folk Arts Festival Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sept. 26 from noon until 5 p.m. Admission is $5, with children under 12 admitted free. Due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the Tri-Cities area, the TriPride Committee has announced that they have canceled the TriPride Parade and Festival scheduled for Oct. 16. The group is looking into alternative ways to celebrate pride this fall and will announce those plans on its Facebook page in the near future.

On Sept. 12 the State of Franklin Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host its eighth annual bell ringing in honor of Constitution Week. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School, located at 214 E. Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library.

Table is hosting a lecture titled

The 22nd annual Sorghum Festival will be held Sept. 18 at the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 12 and under, and free for kids under 3. The Heritage Alliance is hosting a new dining experience in Jonesborough with its Summer Supper series. The suppers will take place on different historic lawns. The remaining Summer Supper is scheduled for Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. at a home on East Main Street. Guests will have a chance to stay late at the Jonesborough and Washington County History Museum located inside the Jonesborough Visitors Center on Sept. 23. Battle of Blountville Reenactment will be held Sept. 24-26 at the Old Hawley Farm, 1173 Hawley Road, Blountville. The main Civil War battle reenactments will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with other activities going on throughout the weekend. Friday events are reserved for school groups. Union and Confederate reenactors will perform continuous living history demonstrations throughout the event. The event will also include a Civil War Ladies Tea on Saturday and an outdoor period worship service Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $3 for adults, with children 6 and under admitted free. Library fun
Join the Kingsport Public Library for a Tuesday morning walking group this fall. Participants will meet in the library’s parking lot and get moving with a walk downtown. Nature
This September, visit the Bays Mountain Amphitheater for “Campfire Tales,” a free storytelling event sponsored by Knoxville TVA Credit Union. Each Friday night of the month, BMP will welcome tellers from the Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild. “Campfire Tales” begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 24. This program is free with park entry. The first 50 kids will receive swag bags, and Knoxville TVA Credit Union will give out lanterns while supplies last. For more information call 423-229-9447.
Theater
LampLight Theatre in downtown Kingsport will present a brand-new production, “In the Valley,” through Sept. 19. “In the Valley” is a 1920s retelling of the story of Job in the familiar setting of the Appalachian Mountains. The show will feature favorite hymns and bluegrass music but will also debut some new original music. “In the Valley” will be presented on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $7 for students, and free for children 5 and under. Call for group rates. Doors open one hour prior to the show. The Kingsport Model Trains Project and Engage Kingsport will present a representation of the Santa Train on the first and third Saturdays of each month at their new location at 1113 Lynn Garden Drive (the former hardware building). The George L. Carter Railroad Museum, located in the Campus Center Building on the campus of East Tennessee State University, is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Heritage Day is held the last Saturday of each month. The Carter Railroad Museum can be identified by a flashing railroad-crossing signal at the back entrance to the Campus Center Building. Jonesborough’s Chuckey Depot Museum is hosting the exhibit “As Fast as Birds Can Fly: The ET & WNC (Tweetsie) Railroad.” The exhibit includes several artifacts from the ET & WNC’s storied history, as well as photographs taken by people who worked on and for the railroad line. The ET & WNC exhibit will be on display at the museum through August. The museum, located at 110 S 2nd Ave., is open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear masks while visiting the museum.
