Two years after blowing up all assumptions about country music and hip-hop with the unstoppable hit “Old Town Road,” Atlanta rapper and singer Lil Nas X has finally released his debut album. Montero (taken from his given name Montero Lamar Hill) is a kaleidoscopic utopia in words and music that continues to challenge expectations while celebrating same-sex love, acceptance and pride. We give a listen on this week’s show and talk about the power of joyful abandon on Montero.

We’ve also got blissful new music from singer and guitarist José González, country singers Carly Pearce and Charley Crockett, a 25th anniversary edition of the legendary album Buena Vista Social Club and more. Nate Chinen of WBGO and Jazz Night In America joins NPR’s Alt.Latino host Felix Contreras, contributor Gavin Godfrey, WNXP’s Jewly Hight, Radio Milwaukee’s Tarik Moody, along with contributor Cyrena Touros and host Robin Hilton as they share their picks for the best albums out on Sept. 17.
