Listen to Baby Stone Gorillas’ “Military”: New Rap Music Today – Pitchfork

Baby Stone Gorillas – “Military”

Since it’s another week, I guess it’s time to post another Baby Stone Gorillas posse cut. The South East L.A. crew are having one of those runs where a regional rapper or group just break off hit after hit (think BlueBucksClan at the start of 2020 or Flint rap last summer). Their latest single, “Military,” stays close to the formula they’ve built, while highlighting some new elements. Similar to “Up to Somethin” and “Baby Stone Gorillas,” the track’s tone is set by the calmly menacing P4K. “Slid through their shit and double backed like on some hockey shit,” he raps, always jumping to the next threatening punchline. Usually Top5ivee has gotten the spotlight on their releases, but it’s 5Much’s turn this time. For a moment in the middle of his verse, he unexpectedly breaks out a smooth melody reminiscent of Oakland’s Aflacko. It only lasts for about five seconds, and it makes you want more. Maybe next week.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.

Check out previous Ones, and listen to new rap from Baby Stone Gorillas and more on our Spotify playlist.
