Free Fridays Concert Series: 8-10 p.m.  Friday, Sept. 17,  Bo Diddley Downtown Plaza (www.freefridaysgnv.com 393-8746) Featuring Wax Wings, an original Gainesville  folk-rock quintet  featuring Brian Turk on upright bass, Andrew Cook on fiddle, Terence Sorel on keys, Jared Groom on drums, and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Chelsea Carnes. With distinctively forceful vocals, Carnes captivates with relatable and poetically crafted lyrics. Her songs are artfully braced by the accompaniment of the finely skilled musicians with whom she collaborates. The results are strikingly textured and sincere compositions that rouse and haunt. Their wide appeal has seen them playing venues ranging from The Fest to the Florida Folk Festival and more.

Featuring Little Mike & The Tornados is well known for its flawless, high energy blues sound modeled after the great Chicago bands of the 50’s.

The livery service rents kayak, paddle boards and canoes, and the building acts as headquarters for Our Santa Fe River, Inc., a charitable 501c3 organization that advocates for the river.

NEW EXHIBITION 

Measurements Rules Come to the Cade Museum: Sept. 19 – Jan. 2,  Cade Museum. Interactive exhibition. How many chickens do you weigh? How tall are you in apples or inches or pennies?  Can you use your foot as a ruler?  The answers to these and other questions can be explored at Measurement Rules, an interactive exhibit at the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention.

Shadow to Substance: Now through Feb. 27, 2022, The Melvin and Lorna Rubin Gallery, The Harn Museum, 3259 Hull Road. The exhibition creates a chronological arc from the past to the present into the future using historical photographs from the Harn and Smathers Library collections and through the lens of Black photographers working today.

ONGOING 

Between Heaven & Earth, The Paintings of Alyne Harris: On exhibition through Jan. 15, 2022 are part of the City of Gainesville’s Of This Place permanent art collection. This exhibit is a community cultural asset and features 200 paintings by Gainesville native Alyne Harris, who paints to express both her lived experiences and her profound spiritual life. Harris’ work draws heavily from African-American traditions including jumping the broom in her wedding scenes. Her paintings call on viewers to travel the paths of their own recollections, an exchange that becomes part of the work itself. Her work reminds the viewer that revisiting the past can connect us with the present and the future. 

Story Time on the Green: 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays  weather permitting through – Oct.2.  Hosted by the Alachua County Library District. Librarians and library staff will read tales and lead activities for infants through 5-year-olds at library green spaces and parks. Parents and families can bring blankets and chairs to spread out. Afternoon Adventure Camp: 2 – 5 p.m.  Wednesdays at the Cade Museum, 811 S. Main St. This  mid-week opportunity will  focus on challenges that boost kids’ creativity and imagination. Cade Museum educators help children ages 5-11 engage in a broad range of hands-on STEAM experiments and activities. In the Creativity Lab and Fab Lab, children will explore and improve skills in 3D design, coding, robotics, and more. Cade’s educators will be available to help children in kindergarten through 5th-grade address homework challenges.   Registration is open. Members receive a discounted rate.  

Little Sparks ages 0-5: 12:15 -1 p.m. Saturday, Cade Museum, 811 S. Main St.  Children will receive a personal Little Sparks kit with all of their own supplies, plus make and takes that extend the fun and learning at home. Our BRAIN and Sweat Solution exhibits will also be open for Little Sparks noon – 5 p.m.

Matheson Museum:  Covid-19 Community Archives on display online.
