Born Cassandra Peterson, she became Elvira, wearing a mound of brunette hair and sporting a sexy black gothic gown while hosting Elvira’s Movie Macabre, a weekly presentation of B movies. Elvira eventually went from a cult pop figure to a lucrative brand, inspiring Halloween costumes, comic books, pinball machines and dolls. Her book Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark comes out this month.
