A September to Remember: Here’s a calendar to help you pick your fun – The Times

The events calendar promises a September to remember for fans of live entertainment, outdoor festivals, beer tastings and art.

Some long-popular summer events were moved to September this year, like Garrison Day in Beaver and the Beaver Falls Car Cruise.

Pittsburgh area concert sites like Club Cafe, Mr. Smalls Theater and Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall finally get back to full gear with show offerings.

Whether plays, galleries, car cruises or wine tastings are your jam, there’s plenty to see and do.

Keep in mind COVID safety protocols, and the lingering possibility that events might be postponed. 

But here’s a good starting point to map out your September fun.

Sept. 1.

Big Knob Grange Fair, New Sewickley Township, continues through Sept. 4.

Glass Animals concert at Stage AE.

Sept. 2.

• “12:52 The Mike Webster Story” opens at Iron Horse Community Theatre, Ambridge. (Continues Sept. 3-5; 9-12 and 17-18.)

• 25th annual Good Samaritan Parish Festival begins, 6 to 9:30 p.m., 725 Glenwood Ave, Ambridge, with bingo, hourly 50/50 raffle, home style dinners, bake sale, beer & bar tent, Ethnic Mass and live music. 

Food Truck Nights & Picnics in the Park, 5 to 7 p.m., every other Thursday, Wright Fields at Veterans Park, Chippewa Township.

The Mattress Factory Block Party includes free admission to the North Side, Pittsburgh art gallery’s season-opening exhibition “Making Home Here” celebrating local artists.

Sept. 3

 • The Hoot Owls in the Monaca First Fridays concert series, 6 p.m. Washington Plaza, Monaca. 

• “Summer Flower Show: The Hidden Life of Trolls” Featuring one-of-a-kind displays of trolls inspired by the mythological creatures found in folklore and pop culture, at Phipps Conservancy & Botanical Gardens, Pittsburgh. (Runs through Sept. 26). 

• Good Samaritan Parish Festival continues.

Sept. 4

Garrison Day Show & Sale, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., central parks of Beaver.

Raccoon Township Car Cruise, 3 p.m., Raccoon Volunteer Fire Department. 

Movies Under The Stars with “Raya and the Last Dragon,” 8:30 p.m. at Chippewa Park Shelter #3 .

• Good Samaritan Parish Festival continues with The Jaggerz at 8 p.m..

• Doobie Brothers, The Pavilion at Star Lake.

• Kool & The Gang, Rivers Casino.

Sept. 5.

• Hat Trick Band, 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Legends Museum in Ambridge.

Blues Society of Western Pennsylvania Blues Challenge, Syria Shrine Pavilion, Cheswick.

• Lady A, Stage AE.

• Good Samaritan Parish Festival continues.

Sept. 6.

•Kennywood Park is open Labor Day from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

Sept. 7.

• Lindsey Buckingham, Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall.

Sept. 8.

Jr. Penguin Encounter 10:30 a.m. at The National Aviary in Pittsburgh. Introduce little ones to an adorable penguin.

Sept. 9.

• Hermie Granati, Jacksons Restaurant + Bar, Center Township.

Lorrie Ann Minicozzi will give a step by step graphite portrait demonstration at the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton at 7 p.m.

• Opening of “Lights On: A 3-Day Celebration of the Pittsburgh Cultural District,” various district venues.

•Shemekia Copeland free concert, Allegheny Overlook, Pittsburgh.

Sept. 10.

Cabin Fever Music Series presents Feralcat And His Quartet, 7 p.m., Beaver Station, Cultural & Event Center.

•Opening night “Barefoot in The Park” by Pittsburgh Public Theater, pop-up performance on the 8th Street Stage. 

•”Pinot & Purses,” 6:30 p.m. wine tasting fundraiser, Merrick Art Gallery, New Brighton.

 •Pittsburgh Irish Festival opens (runs through Sept. 12) at The Lots at Sandcastle, West Homestead. Zambelli Internationale fireworks on opening night.

Sept. 11.

Beaver Falls Car Cruise, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Barrel & Flow Fest” craft beer festival celebrating Black-owned breweries and Black arts, SouthSide Works, Pittsburgh.

9/11 Ceremony “Let’s Roll” 3 to 6 p.m. at the Beaver Gazebo in Irvine Park, a free ceremony with speakers and music.

Original Pittsburgh Taco Festival, The Strip District Terminal (21st and Smallman St,), noon to 7 p.m.

•The Project Band at the Grand Valley Inn party tents, Fallston.

Sept. 12.

•Freddy’s Haunts haunted trail opens for the season in Independence Township. (Also open Sept. 18-19 and 24-26 then into October.)

•Ambridge Band Bash, noon at Merchant Coffee with David Granati & Co. and Mudslinger Band; 4 p.m. Hot Metal Horns at the Performing Arts Legends Museum.

Asian Lantern Festival 6:30 p.m. at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, illuminating the zoo with the glow of colossal, wildlife-themed, handcrafted lanterns.

Sept. 24.

Zombies of The Corn scare attraction opens for the season in New Sewickley Township.

•Chris Stapleton, The Pavilion at Star Lake.

•John Cusack Live plus a screening of “Say Anything,” Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall.

•Pittsburgh Symphony opening weekend, Heinz Hall.

Sept. 25.

Bridgewater Autumn Fest, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Bridge Street.

•43rd Annual Beaver County Invitational Marching Band Festival, 6:30 p.m., Reeves Stadium on the Geneva College campus, Beaver Falls.

Valley Vintage Motorworks Customer Appreciation Day & Ride, 2-7 p.m., 927 Pennsylvania Ave., Monaca, with refreshments, entertainment, free bubble hockey and arcade games and a vintage mopeds cruise through the county.
