B Lovee – “IYKYK”
After UK drill drum kits were run into the ground, drill producers in New York searched for a new wrinkle to fold into the sound. They eventually turned to the city’s timeless tradition of sampling, adding a refreshing twist to the subgenre’s production. On “IYKYK,” Bronx producer ChrisSaves places clean and rattling drums on top of the hypnotic melody of Wayne Wonder’s “No Letting Go,” resulting in the rare drill beat that sounds kind of sweet. Bronx rapper B Lovee raps like he’s trying to contain rage that could rush to the surface at any second, yet the sample attaches a lightness that his music never had before. It’s an effective clash.
