RogerFlo turns his music into his lifestyle, rapping on goals and creating a successful stream of 13 projects while preparing to work on his debut album
Erie hip-hop artist RogerFlo, 20, uses his music to be transparent and goal-oriented. As if the notepad was his journal, Flo (whose real name is Roger Flores) humbly lets the world into his mind and the results have been immense with 96,000 streams of his work in 2020 on Spotify alone. With a catalog of 13 projects, this rhymesayer is gearing up to work on his debut album.
1. What does RogerFlo as an artist represent?
RogerFlo represents freedom of speech; getting to speak what’s really in your mind. I was going to say I represent myself in a way. I started off by just talking about my life and what I was doing wrong and how I have to do better in life if I want to go where I want to go, and also being confident in myself and the journey. I’ve had many people tell me I inspired them and even though I was never sure exactly why, I eventually figured out that it was because I never had a problem opening up to things and being real about myself. Then finding out a way for myself to do it creatively, and now they’re finding their ways, as well.

2. In a lot of your music, you talk about reaching for your goals. How much of this applies to your personal life?
It’s all I ever think about nowadays, to be honest. On my projects/mixtapes, I always touched on personal topics and my dreams in general. Eventually, I started seeing that I have to take things one step at a time and hit goal by goal to reach that big picture I’ve always seen as a kid.
3. You’ve received some great attention over the years for your work. Can you talk about where your mind was at before the spotlight?
That’s actually crazy now that I think about it. When I first started, I was actually scared to reach out and even show people my music. That’s why I eventually just taught myself how to engineer my own music. I didn’t really know anyone that could point a finger out. Eventually, I started being confident in my music the more I started writing more frequently and finishing tracks more often. So, I started feeling like I need to push my music and let people know I make music! From there, all I got was good feedback and friends who wanted to try it out. Eventually, I started networking more and meeting new people; getting to work with and understand the city way more than I ever had and it just kept me going ever since. Music turned into my lifestyle.

4. From when you started rapping to now, you’ve been trying out different flows and production. What is your purpose for experimenting with music?
I’ve actually started making music playing guitar and trying to sing. So, I’ve always had a wide variety in the type of music I listen to. I’ve always wanted to try out everything I enjoy, and hip-hop is what mainly worked out for my sound. I would like to expand on that in whichever way I can.
5. What project would you say of yours would you choose to be a great introduction to someone who has never heard your music?
My sophomore project in high school, “Grown Youth,” is my most memorable project I’ve ever made. It just stuck with me my whole life, everything I was going through. I made sure to put all my emotion into every track and every track just reminds me of who I really am. I make completely different music now but still contain some of the same elements I used to have back then. But overall, the messages I have within every track in “Grown Youth” has stayed with me, so I’d have to say I’d want people to listen to that to really get to understand me and really understand what my music is now.
RogerFlo’s music can be found on platforms such as Spotify and YouTube.
