KeeTown entertainment district coming to Waukee after pandemic derailed original development plans – Des Moines Register

After the COVID-19 pandemic derailed its original development plans, Waukee is moving forward with a massive entertainment district.

In 2019, the Waukee City Council approved a 40-acre development then dubbed “The Quarter.” After the pandemic put plans on pause, a new development group is taking over with “KeeTown Loop,” a similar concept in the same location in the Kettlestone Development along Grand Prairie Parkway.

According to the project’s website, developer and businessman Harry Coin is attached to the project.

“This is a different group and concept than what was previously envisioned,” said Brandon Bingham, a spokesman for the project. “Same location, very similar, but it’s actually really happening and really going now post-pandemic, with everything kind of modified and changed.”

Bingham said the project is fully funded and construction is expected to begin this fall.

A 3,500-seat entertainment venue will be the centerpiece of KeeTown Loop. Also encompassing two hotels and a 100-unit apartment complex, the complex is expected to draw more then 350,000 people to Waukee annually.

Construction of the 40-acre development just west of the western I-80/I-35 interchange is expected to be completed by 2023.

According to a news release, the city of Waukee also is investing in improvements at the intersection of Grand Prairie Parkway and Ashworth Road to handle an expected increase in traffic.

“As Waukee continues to grow as a community, entertainment and leisure options become key to quality of life,” Waukee Mayor Courtney Clarke said in the news release. “KeeTown Loop checks many boxes for our residents and visitors alike, and we are excited to see it emerge in the already thriving Kettlestone Development.”

Clarke did not return a phone call seeking additional comment.

According to the most recent U.S. Census estimate, Waukee was the fastest-growing city in the Des Moines metro over the previous decade, nearly doubling in population.
