Erie rap artist DeAndre Collins, who goes by Sharpshooter (S.S), has aspired to be one of the best writers the city has ever seen since the age of 13. The now 30-year-old rapper, who has more than 20 projects to his name, is preparing to release yet another with the same amount of ambition that he has always carried.

1. As an adolescent, you decided to go full throttle with music. What motivated you to start your craft?

At the age of 13, I decided to hit the ground running with creating music because I have a story to tell. I was always musically inclined, from writing little lines here and there in my notepad in elementary. With my sound and style of how I wanted to go about it, I knew I was meant for it. Music changed my whole life in ways I can’t even put into words. Before my grandmother passed, she always told me to pursue your dreams and you can accomplish and make anything possible as long as you put your mind, heart and soul into it.

2. You are known for consistently putting out bodies of work. What is your motive behind releasing so much material?

My motive behind releasing so much music stems from my love for music and also letting people see and hear my story from my point of view. Just to have a catalog of music like mine is amazing but motivating. It’s also great for those that are tuning in, always been tuning in, and those that are just starting to listen to me.

3. What is the process behind your writing? Is it two to three songs at a time? A song a day?

At one point, I was writing almost six songs a day! Hard to believe, but music and writing just comes natural for me. It’s like it’s engraved in me. I write even when I don’t feel like it, and that’s rare, honestly. But over time, I felt like I was overdoing the writing process and not really taking time to think out ideas, concepts and storylines to the music I was writing because of how many songs I was writing at the time. Now, I usually write three songs a week just so I can think and write it how I want to write it without overly thinking.

4. Lyrically, you have tackled some touchy issues from the school system to racial injustice. How has the feedback been from those kind of tracks?

Absolutely! The feedback so far has been nothing but positive things, and many have thanked me for speaking up for what has been a huge issue occurring within our school system for many, many years. I feel like many situations and current events within our school system has been swept under the rug and was never resolved. From me being a custodian within the Erie School District, I’ve seen the best and the worst firsthand. I do feel that custodians do not get the same respect or treated well like those that are higher up, such as teachers, principals, engineers, engineer of maintenance, school firemen, you name it. And this just doesn’t happen to be just here. These issues are occurring in other states as well.

5. Your latest work, “Rise Above 3,” is set to be released July 10. Where are you planning to take listeners with this installment?

“Rise Above 3” has been an album I’ve been working on for almost two years. The title stems from pain, struggle, current issues, losses and certain problems I want to tackle on this album specifically. With this installment, I want to take my listeners onto a journey where they can not only feel, hear and see where I come from, but to also relate and can understand. This album can possibly be the album to change everything for myself.

Sharpshooter (S.S) can be found on all music platforms, including Spotify and YouTube.
