Monroe Street Midway to feature outdoor activities, food, entertainment in downtown Detroit – Crain’s Detroit Business

Bedrock Detroit this summer will transform the site of a future development in downtown Detroit into an area dedicated for outdoor recreation.

The Monroe Street Midway will open Friday on the site of Bedrock’s planned Monroe Blocks development and run until early this fall, Bedrock announced Monday.

The midway will feature a roller skating rink, basketball courts, and food and beverages served from concession stands and food trucks. Local DJs, outdoor fitness classes and artwork from Detroit artists also will be featured.

The new entertainment zone is a continuation of Bedrock’s multimillion dollar Decked Out Detroit initiative in partnership with the Rocket Community Fund and city of Detroit, designed to support small businesses during the pandemic. Earlier this year, the property was home to a temporary drive-in movie theater, courtesy of Dan Gilbert’s Detroit-based Bedrock LLC real estate company and Troy-based Emagine Entertainment Inc.

Rollout Detroit, an outdoor skating rink that partners southwest Detroit’s RollerCade and Bedrock, will be open noon-9 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday and noon-11 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. Roller skate sessions will be blocked off in two- or three-hour time slots and will cost $10 per session, with roller skates available for $3. Walk-ins are welcome or sessions can be booked ahead of time.

The Rocket Mortgage Sports Zone, open noon-9 p.m. daily free of charge and operated by Come Play Detroit, features four basketball courts and a multi-use court for games including pickleball and handball.

Bedrock is offering free four-hour parking validations for guests who make a purchase at the Monroe Street Midway.

Capacity limitations, social distancing and mask guidelines will align with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ rules. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available for all guests. Enhanced sanitary measures and cleaning protocols will be utilized.

The $830 million mixed-use Monroe Blocks development broke ground in 2018, but has been quiet during redesigns, a slowdown in construction during the pandemic and for other Bedrock projects. It is to feature high-rise towers for office and residential use, along with space for retail and other uses.
