MARSHALL — The Marshall Area Fine Arts Council wants to bring summer music back to the Liberty Park bandshell.
MAFAC is contacting performers who’ve appeared at the bandshell in the past or who might be interested. It hopes to schedule at least four concerts for the summer months.
MAFAC Board President Cathy Schlagel said dates for the concerts have not been finalized. Wednesday evenings are entirely open in 2021 since the Marshall City Band is unable to perform due to on-stage social distancing guidelines.
“We’d like to consider filling some of the weeks that the city band usually performs,” Schlagel said. “We’ll see what works for the performers. It depends on when they’d be available.”
She said the total number of concerts will also be shaped by the level of interest among performers. Funding could become a factor since MAFAC ordinarily pays performers a small stipend.
“We know we want to have at least four, like we’ve done in other years prior to 2020,” Schlagel said. “We’ll consider possibly doing more if there’s enough participation.”
MAFAC calls its summer outdoor concert series “A Little Night Music.” The performances ordinarily last a full hour.
The concerts have taken place in the weeks following the city band series. They covered the end of July and most of the month of August.
Schlagel anticipates that bringing outdoor concerts back to the bandshell will draw enthusiastic audiences. The park’s seating area has enough room for audience members to socially distance.
MAFAC concerts would lead to a more extensive use of the bandshell than what occurred in 2020. The facility hosted one event last fall, a fall musical performed by Marshall High School students.
“The bandshell has always been a popular gathering place,” Schlagel said. “We think there will be great turnouts this summer. Both performers and audience member are ready for it after last year.”
Marshall EDA Director Lauren Deutz said she welcomes the news that MAFAC wants to host bandshell entertainment in 2021.
She considers bandshell concerts something that can help to generate weekday evening economic activity throughout the city. It could be noticeable at both restaurants and stores.
“If people are out for a concert, they’re more likely to eat out somewhere or shop,” Deutz said. “There are definitely some benefits to the local economy. It should be both entertaining and profitable.”
