20 Celebrities Who You Had No Idea Went To School Together – elle.com

Most secondary school yearbooks will have a section guessing who the ‘most likely to be famous’ student will be.

But with the odds of ending up in Hollywood pretty scarce, when two pupils actually get there it’s quite a shock. However, this has happened on multiple occasions given how many celebrities actually went to school with fellow celebrities.

From Kerry Washington auditioning for Gwyneth Paltrow’s a capella band to Lauryn Hill attending Zach Braff’s Bat Mitzvah, read on for some of the most mind-blowing A-List alumni pairs…

1 Rachel Bilson and Rami Malek

The OC alum attended Notre Dame high school in California with the Bohemian Rhapsody star and were friends back in the day.

However, while appearing on a recent Armchair Expert podcast episode with Dax Shepherd, Bilson was asked about her friendship with the Oscar winner.

‘So Rami was a good friend of mine, we were in the same crew, we did The Crucible together senior year,’ Bilson explained. ‘We kind of kept in contact a little bit so obviously he gets super famous and he’s always been super talented, a really amazing actor even in high school.’

So years later when Bilson saw that Malek was sweeping up at awards season for his portrayal of Queen superstar Freddie Mercury, Bilson explained how she posted a throwback photo to celebrate yet soon learned that Malek was not exactly thrilled about it.

‘It was the dorkiest picture of both of us but I put it up because it was funny and I think it’s important to be able to make fun of yourself…. a week goes by and I look at my DMs on Instagram and I have a message from Rami but it wasn’t like “hey how are you?” it went straight to, “I would really appreciate it if you take that down, I’m a really private person”.

‘I was like, “oh sh*t ok,”‘ Bilson continued. ‘I get really hot and started sweating, like I’m nervous and like “oh my god what did I do?” He was a good friend of mine.’

According to Bilson, she removed the picture and replied to his message apologising and telling him to ‘go get that Oscar’ but never heard back.

‘I was bummed because he had always been super nice and we were good friends.’

Malek has not responded to the comments so far (ELLE UK has reached out).

Also attending that school was Kirsten Dunst, who Bilson says she remembers as a child star too.

2 Meghan Markle and Katharine Foster

The Duchess of Sussex went to the same Los Angeles high school – Immaculate Heart high school – as the West End star Katharine Foster (née McPhee).

The Waitress actor even shared a throwback photo of the old friends backstage at a musical they performed in together, with Foster later telling People: ‘She was actually in my sister’s class — two years older than me. My sister did shows with her, I did two shows with her when I was a seventh-grader or eighth-grader. They were obscure musicals. I think one was called Yankee Doodle. I don’t know if there are videos of her singing, but she’s a really good singer.’

3 Zendaya and Gabby Douglas

In June 2015 the Malcolm & Marie star and Olympic gymnast both graduated high school on the same day. According to E!, both stars attended the Oak Park Independent School in California which allows for flexible working ,which suited the budding actress who was already working in TV and gymnast with training.

4 Adam Levine and Jonah Hill

This unlikely pair of friends grew up together in Los Angeles. Speaking to Howard Stern in 2014, Hill explained: ‘Our dads met in the principles office in Junior High, we grew up together, we carpooled, we lived in each other’s houses.’

Hill even officiated at Levine’s wedding to Behati Prinsloo in Mexico a few months later.

5 Adele and Jessie J

Both stars attended the performing arts BRIT school in Croydon, London, and were in the same year group though were in different classes.

Speaking to People in December, Jessie said: ‘We were in the same year! We used to sing at lunchtime together. Obviously at that time we didn’t realise that we’d both [eventually] have music out… but she’s amazing. She was always that really bright energy at school.’

Jessie continued to say they are both still friendly, ‘every time I get a chance, I try and text her. But she’s super busy Global superstar, mum – standard’.

The respect is clearly mutual with Adele telling the Daily Record in 2012 that Jessie’s voice is ‘criminal’.

‘The things she can do with her voice are criminal… I have seen acoustic performances online and she is like an acrobat or a magician with her voice.’

6 Matt Damon and Ben Affleck

The Boston-based friends – who famously won an Oscar together in 1997 for penning the script of Good Will Hunting – attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Massachusetts.

7 Kerry Washington and Gwyneth Paltrow

The actors remain close friends after first meeting decades ago at Spence School in New York City.

When the friends came together for a Goop event in 2019, the two reminisced about their school days with Paltrow sharing that as she was about to graduate she held auditions for the schools a capella group for which Washington auditioned.

According to E, Paltrow explained: ‘This is so surreal… I was in a singing group called Triple Trio… We were holding auditions because a bunch of us were graduating, and in walks Kerry Washington. The most beautiful—first of all, your face has not changed. No ageing whatsoever—This beautiful eight grader comes in so confident. She opened her mouth and the most exquisite voice came out.’

Washington also confirmed to the crowd that Paltrow was a cool girl at school, saying: ‘Gwyneth was always cool. By junior year, absolutely.’

8 Busta Rhymes and Jay-Z

The two rappers make up two thirds of a pretty impressive rap alumni from the George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High school in Brooklyn, New York, as they also attended with late rapper the Notorious BIG (real name Christopher Wallace).

Jay-Z reflected on having rap battles with Busta Rhymes during their lunch breaks in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

‘Me and Busta Rhymes actually had a rap battle in the lunch room, ‘ he told the talk show host.

9 Cameron Diaz and Snoop Dogg

The Charlie’s Angels star and ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ rapper both attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School in California and were about a year or so apart.

In 2013, Snoop spoke about Diaz to Yahoo Music telling them: ‘She ran with my homegirls, all my little cheerleading homegirls, she was in [their] little crew… she was fly and she was hip.’

10 Matthew Perry and Justin Trudeau

Two unlikely schoolmates occur in the form of Matthew Perry – aka Friends’ Chandler Bing – and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who attended school in Ottawa together. However the pair are actually even more connected as Perry’s mother worked for Trudeau’s father – another former Prime Minister of Canada.

In 2017, while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Perry admitted that he and Trudeau weren’t the best of friends at school and even got into a physical scrap.

‘We actually beat up Justin Trudeau,’ said a remorseful Perry. ‘I think he was excelling in a sport that we weren’t so it was pure jealousy… I think he was the only kid in school that we could beat up. I’m not bragging about this, this is terrible. I was a stupid kid.’

Trudeau responded by taking to Twitter and jokingly challenging Perry to a rematch: ‘I’ve been giving it some thought, and you know what, who hasn’t wanted to punch Chandler? How about a rematch
@MatthewPerry?’

To which Perry (sensibly) responded: ‘I think I will pass at your request for a rematch kind sir (given that you currently have an army at your disposal). [sic]’

11 Prince William and Eddie Redmayne

Both William and Redmayne attended the prestigious school Eton at the same time. In November 2018, Redmayne recalled playing rugby with the royal when speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live!

‘Playing rugby with Prince William, I always felt a bit sorry for him because any school you played all they wanted to do was tackle Prince William so they could say, “I tackled Prince William”,’ he revealed. ‘So if you were standing next to Prince William like I was it was actually quite easy and quite fun.’

12 Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler

The two actors – and daughters of superstars – both attended Crossroads School For Arts and Sciences in Santa Monica, California and are still very close friends.

13 Jada Pinkett-Smith and Tupac Shakur

The actor and late rapper became close friends after meeting at the Baltimore School for the Arts.

Speaking to Howard Stern in 2016, Pinkett discussed their very platonic friendship, saying ‘there was no physical chemistry’ between them but they were very close.

‘It was hard enough just with us being friends, we had a very volatile relationship… I had never in my life met a person like Pac, he had so much charisma,’ she said.

14 Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Sian Clifford

The Fleabag stars met at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London (RADA) with Waller-Bridge writing in her Fleabag: The Scriptures book that there was no one else who she would have wanted to play her title character’s sister, Claire, in her award-winning series.

‘She was as extraordinary then as she is now,’ Waller-Bridge wrote. ‘I value her opinion and talent deeply.’

15 Khloe Kardashian and Nicole Richie

Khloe and Nicole both attended school together in Los Angeles, California.

Speaking on the Emergency Contact podcast in October, Kardashian said Richie was one of her ‘best friends’ growing up after they attended the same school together.

Kardashian ended up working for Richie later on in life while remaining friends, as she explained on the podcast: ‘We were really close and then towards the end of Simple Life she needed some help and I needed a job so I did that,’ the reality star noted.

16 Robert Pattinson and Jack Whitehall

Both Pattinson and Whitehall attended the independent prep school Tower House School in south west London. Whitehall has recalled going to school with Pattinson in his stand up comedy routines, like the time he joked about how everyone always has a ‘Mr Perfect’ at school to contest with, and his was… Robert Pattinson.

17 Michaela Coel and Paapa Essiedu

Another drama school pair who ended up working together was Michaela Coel and Paapa Essiedu who became friends after attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Coel later ended up casting Essiedu as the part of Kwame in her critically-acclaimed drama I May Destroy You.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2020, Essiedu said of Coel: ‘Her personality is so massive. She’s a very special person.’

18 Timothée Chalamet and Lourdes Leon

The Little Women star and model daughter of Madonna both attended New York City’s La Guardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and are believed to have dated after meeting there.

In a 2017 interview with Andy Cohen, Chalamet and the host recalled dancing together at a party with Madonna and Lourdes, or Lola, but pretty swiftly shied away from talking about dating the star, saying: ‘Next question, I’m out of here,’ when Cohen asked how long they dated for.

19 Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman

Both Watts and Kidman attended the North Sydney Girls High School, and later became close friends when starring in the 1991 film Flirting together, according to Watts.

‘We already knew each other but that’s when our friendship forged,’ Watts told People in 2017. ‘We’ve gone through a lot together over a significant amount of time. That history binds you. We have a strong respect and love for one another.’

In 2018, Kidman shared a photo of herself holding Watts’ hands across the dinner table, to wish her friend a happy 50th birthday, saying they had been friends for ‘the last 35 years’.

20 Zach Braff and Lauryn Hill

The unlikely friendship between the Scrubs star and Fugees member began when they both attended Columbia High School in New Jersey together.

In 2018, Braff confirmed on Twitter that the high school friends were close enough that Hill attended his Bar Mitzvah.
