On Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives charged the president with “incitement of insurrection” for the January 6 riot in Washington that led to the deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol Building.
The House voted 232 to 197 to impeach President Trump, who will now face a trial in the U.S. Senate, but that will not occur before he leaves office next Wednesday.
It didn’t take long after the impeachment was announced for the reactions to trend on social media. Numerous celebrities took to Twitter to share their feelings.
Among those was actress/activist Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) who was actually reserved in her post, “House Impeaches Trump for a second time. Trump has made history as the only president who has been impeached twice.”
Given that Ms. Milano had called for unity following President-Elect Joe Biden’s victory in November, she should be lauded for taking the high road and sticking to the facts.
However, other celebrities found it was time to gloat.

Radio personality Angela Yee (@angelayee) of the nationally syndicated morning show The Breakfast Club, was far more direct, “Trump can’t even tweet right now (Weary face) I know he’s losing it”
Actress/TV host Vivica A. Fox (@MsVivicaFox) simply tweeted, “AWESOME NEWS!! #BYEDON”
Singer/actress Bette Midler (@BetteMidler) was equally direct, “IMPEACHED AGAIN!”
Former Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson (@jessetyler) was a bit more snarky in his commentary, “Trump will have the legacy of doing a really great job of getting impeached. Better than any other president. That’s a perfect biggley accomplishment!”
Model Chrissy Teigen (@chrissyteigen) tried to find humor in the situation, but given that models aren’t typically recognized for their academic skills it almost comes off otherwise when she tweeted, “I didn’t even know you could be impeached twice. I thought it was like dying”
Comedian and Full Frontal host Samantha Bee offered a tweet that was far more humorous, “Congrats to Trump on finally getting more votes than a Clinton”
Actor Mark Hamill clearly did some counting when he tweeted, “Only 393 days since our last Impeachment.”
Author Stephen King (@StephenKing) was among the celebrities who was the most direct on social media, calling for more than removal from office. “Impeach him and convict him. Anyone else would be in jail now, wearing an orange jumpsuit. Also, he’s dangerous.”
Some even questioned whether the second impeachment went far enough, and called out Republican lawmakers for not supporting the impeachment. Among those was former CBS News anchor Dan Rather (@DanRather) who clearly thought the country would unify over the impeachment. He tweeted, “A flesh wound requires far more than a bandaid. Impeachment should have been a thundering bipartisan statement. That so many Republicans parrot the big lie that this election was stolen, threatens future violence. These past 4-plus years demand a reckoning with reality.”
Actor George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) also took issue with House Republicans, “The importance of 10 GOP House members voting to impeach is this: It shows that it’s not about politics, it’s about courage. The truth is there, for those with guts enough to say it and mean it. To the ten with those guts, your country salutes you.”
Westworld star Jeffrey Wright seemed upset that more Republicans didn’t vote to impeach when he tweeted, “Impeached. Again. Bi-partisan.”
Even some former supporters and friends of President Trump responded on social media to offer their commentary on why impeachment was the right way to go. Among those was Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera (@GeraldoRivera), who posted, “#DonaldTrump should be Impeached. He should know history is judging him whether or not he is convicted and removed from office. He should also apologize to the families of those who lost their lives. His actions were inexcusable & undeniable. This time, he did it.”
